A globally competitive and leading electric utility provider, Korea Electric Power Corporation (KEPCO) - which recently ranked in the 2016 Forbes Global 2000 as the world’s top electric utility, expanded its operations to the Philippines in 1995, in response to the Philippine Government’s calls to develop and utilize the country’s indigenous resources and augment its power supply.

Since its entry into the Philippine power industry, KEPCO Philippines now provides approximately thirteen percent (13%) of the total installed generation capacity in the country.

To date, KEPCO Philippines continues to break new grounds to help meet the country’s growing power demand.

KEPCO started off as Hansung Electric Company in 1898 at the start of Korea's modernization. Since that time, KEPCO has supported Korea's economic growth and enriched people's lives by providing a stable supply of power. 

KEPCO is doing it utmost to provide a stable power supply as Korea's power company, which is critical for both Korea's ecoomy and her people. 

Amid the rapidly changing energy industry, I believe KEPCO is at a crucial point at which it must raise the efficiency and competitiveness of its overall business areas, as well as devise and implement optimized alternatives to make electric power consumption more efficient and to promote green growth.

For twenty (20) years already, Korea Electric Power Corporation (KEPCO), which ranks as the world’s top electric utility in the 2016 Forbes Global 2000, has been making its presence felt in the Philippines, by providing, not only power to communities, but more importantly, jobs and livelihood to many Filipinos.

Its first venture in the Philippine energy market was in May 1995, when KEPCO Philippines (KEPHILCO), its oldest Philippine affiliate, won the bidding for the rehabilitation, operation, maintenance and management (ROMM) of the 650MW Malaya Thermal Power Plant. For more than fifteen years, KEPHILCO successfully operated the Malaya Power Plant, improving its thermal efficiency and restoring it to its rated capacity 

In just a year's time from winning the Malaya Project, KEPCO quickly cemented its presence in the Philippines when it also won the NPCs Build-Operate-Transfer (BOT) Project, for the 1200MW Combined Cycle Natural Gas Power Plant in Ilijan, Batangas. Another Philippine affiliate, KEPCO Ilijan Corporation (KEILCO), currently operates and manages the Ilijan Power Plant, supplying stable and reliable electricity to the Luzon Grid. 

Fueled by its commitment to impact the whole Philippine energy market, KEPCO expanded its operations in the Visayas islands when it started the construction of the first merchant power plant in the Philippines, through another affiliate, KEPCO SPC Power Corporation. This 200MW Circulating Fluidized Bed Combustion (CFBC) Power Plant in Naga, Cebu, had been operating since February 2011, and to this date, still continues to meet the growing electricity demand of the Visayas grid. 

The history of KEPCO in the Philippines manifests its firm commitment to create strong and meaningful international partnerships that mutually benefit the societies and communities it has penetrated. Until this day, KEPCO aims to foster inclusive growth by strengthening its corporate social responsibility efforts and building stronger ties with its partners and stakeholders. History remembers the time when Filipino soldiers bravely fought side by side with Koreans in thier joint struggle for freedom and domocracy in the Korean War  of the 1950s. Through the years, the cooperation between Korea and the Philippines continues to advance and strengthen in the economic, political and cultural spheres.

These ties have prompted the Korea Electric Power Corporation(KEPCO), a globally competitive and leading electric utility provider which controls the generation, transmission and distribution of electricity in Korea, to respond to the Philippine Goverment's call to increase the country's power supply, develop and utilize its indigenous resources.

KEPCO participated in, and subsequently won, the international biddings for the Rehabilitation, Operation, Maintenance and Management (ROMM) of the 650MW Malaya Thermal Power Plant in Pililla, Rizal in May 1995 (implemented by KEPCO Philippines Corporation or KEPHILCO); and the Build-Operate-Transfer (BOT) of the 1200 MW Ilijan Combined-Cycle Ilijan, Batangas Natural Gas Power Project in October 1996 (implemented by KEPCO Ilijan Corporation or KEILCO).

The rehabilitation phase of the 20 year old Malaya plant was completed in October 1998, 10 months ahead of schedule. The successful recovery of the plant's original rated generation capacity of 650 MW is equivalent to the building of a new 220 MW power plant but at a much lower cost. In addition, the thermal efficiency was improved by an average of 4.5%. The Malaya plant curently provides stable and reliable electricity to the Luzon Grid. 

The Ilijan Plant was principally designed to operate as a base-load unit using natural gas sourced from the Malampaya gas fields in Palawan with diesel as back-up fuel. The Project is in line with the Philippine Government's thrust of utilizing its indigenous energy resources, particularly natural gas. Cited by POWER Magazine as one of the top 12 power plants of the world, the plant boasts of state-of-the-art, highly efficient 501G gas turbines (known for having one of the highest efficiency ratings among all industrial gas turbines in the world) that exhaust into a three-pressure reheat natural circulation heat recovery steam generators.

KEPCO Philippines continued to explore new projects and consequently helped address the power shortage in the Visayas region when it constructed the 200 MW Circulating Fluidized Bed Combustion (CFBC) Power Plant in Naga, Cebu. The plant utilizes the CFBC boiler-type technology whose emission system is proven to be environmentally-sound by over 500 CFBC units currently operating safely worldwide. The Project is implemented by KEPCO SPC Power Corporation, a joint venture of KEPHILCO and SPC Power Corporation under a Build-Operate-Own (BOO) scheme.

These outstanding milestones manifest the state-of-the-art technological excellence and competence of KEPCO. With its significant contributions towards a stable and reliable power supply in the Philippines, KEPCO Philippines has emerged as a major player in the Philippine energy industry.

KEPCO Philippines operations, with the KEILCO and KSPC power plants currently provide approximately 13% of the Philippines total power supply.
